Carl Tanner at New York City Opera
Shenandoah Alum Carl Tanner ('85) sang the leading role of Canio in nine performances of Pagliacci at the New York City Opera. This is one of the best parts of being Dean at Shenandoah--getting to hear and see a world famous tenor (and alum!) take complete command of the stage in an unforgettable role. On the final performance of this production and in the role of Canio--he brought to the audience the grace, expression, emotion, pathos and POWER, for which he is known. Vesti la Giubba* (put on the costume) literally stopped the performance.
His was the final bow of the evening, and when he joined some 70 cast members on the stage the audience responded (erupted) with shouts of Bravo and cheers.
*The first record/sound recording to sell one million copies was the great tenor Enrico Caruso singing Vesti la Giubba in 1907.
