A fantastic friend of Shenandoah Conservatory just celebrated his 95th Birthday and a grand celebration was held on the stage of Armstrong Concert Hall after the Orchestra's October 3, 2008 Opening of the 2008-09 Concert Series.
Chauncey Kelly lives in nearby Strasbourg, Virginia. He was born in Pittsburgh and served in the US Army during WWII. He performed with Arturo Toscanini and the famed NBC Orchestra, Fritz Reiner and the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and many other famed ensembles. He was president of the Shenandoah Arts Council from 1987 – 1989 and has been on the Lord Fairfax Community College Educational Foundation since 1987. In 2006 he received their Medallion of Recognition. He also taught music appreciation as an adjunct faculty member at LFCC.
He taught at Carnegie Mellon, and was conductor and music director of the Savannah Symphony and band director of the 78th Division and 225th Division US Army Bands. He graduated from the US Army Music School, completed graduate work at Juilliard and has a bachelor of arts degree in education from the Carnegie Mellon.
